COLUMBUS, Ohio – Nathan Tomasello, the nation’s top-ranked 133-pounder, has been selected as this week’s Big Ten Wrestle of the Week, the conference announced today.
As redshirt junior from Parma, Ohio, Tomasello was instrumental in helping the Buckeyes top both No. 6 Nebraska and No. 12 Minnesota last weekend. Against the Cornhuskers, he earned a 5-2 decision over No. 5-ranked Eric Montoya in Ohio State’s 24-13 victory. Less than 48 hours later, Tomasello pinned 17th-ranked Mitch McKee of Minnesota to give the Buckeyes a 9-8 lead after four matches. Those bonus points proved to be critical in a 24-20 come-from-behind victory.
On the season, Tomasello is 15-0, has won 58 of his last 59 matches (including 25 in a row in Big Ten dual action) and is 6-0 vs. ranked opponents. Two of those six victories have come over top-five ranked foes (Zane Richard of Illinois and Montoya of Nebraska). This is the second Wrestler of the Week honor this season for Tomasello and the third of his career.
Ohio State finished up Big Ten dual action with an 11-2 overall record and 7-2 conference mark. The fourth-ranked Buckeyes wrap up the regular season on Sunday, Feb. 19 when it travels to No. 8 Cornell for a NWCA National Duals Championship Series match against the Big Red beginning at 1 p.m.
